2007 Double Eagle Merlot

Double Eagle combines two passions of David Grieve the vineyard owner; it is the rarest of golf shots and is also the second release of 232 cases of hand-selected ripe bunches from his family vineyard in the secluded Lovall Valley growing area of Napa. Accessible only from Sonoma, yet in Napa, Lovall Valley is an elevated valley just above Carneros on the Napa—Sonoma county line. Lovall Valley sits between Sonoma Valley, Carneros and Mt. Veeder.

The cool evenings and mornings along with the abundant sunshine create a beautiful environment for growing most Bordeaux varietals, especially Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

2007 was a classic year for Merlot with an ideal bud-break and flowering followed by a relatively moderate growing with just enough warm days to provide perfect ripening.

The wine is very deep in color with a pronounced nose of blackberry jam, roasted meat, cocoa and toasted nuts. The palate is quite ripe with the same distinctive sweet blackberry jam and savory notes of bay laurel, spicy toasted characters and leather. That leather note led us to use leather for the label, a truly unique wine produced in miniscule quantities topped with a truly unique label.
