2009 Double Eagle Red Wine
Double Eagle combines two passions of David Grieve and Vance Rose; it is the rarest of gold shots and is the third release of 240 cases of hand-selected ripe bunches from our vineyard in the sheltered and secluded Lovall Valley area of Napa Valley. Accessible only from Sonoma, yet in Napa, Lovall Valley is an elevated, cool, secluded bowl just above Carneros on the Napa – Sonoma county line.
Lovall Valley is cooler than Carneros, but doesn’t have as much fog, giving the vines abundant sunshine for ripening and coolness for retention of flavor and acidity, making this a beautiful environment for growing most Bordeaux varietals.
2009 was a cool and late spring with the relatively coolness continuing on through the growing season with the magical combination of parallel sugar accumulation and physiological maturity that hasn’t been seen for a number of years. Our vineyard only gives us a very small crop naturally and with our select green-thinning at veraison and additional fruit-drop in October, we harvested a miniscule .65 tons per acre of mouth-wateringly ripe and concentrated fruit in November. Hand sorted in the vineyard and again at the winery the wine was de-stemmed and then sorted again for the third time.
The wine is deep in color with aromas and layers of flavors of caramelized anise, cassis, sweet cocoa, blackberries and cola. Firm in structure but generous in mouth-feel make the wine drinkable now, but will develop and improve for a number of years to come.
